I know this is The Bachelorette, and friendship is not what Lexie’s after, but deeming “Friendzone” a dirty word is dumb. PSA: the “Friendzone” is not the shark from Jaws, nor is it the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. The editors don’t get a lot of credit for their work in reality TV, and I know it’s a painstaking job, so I don’t want to be too critical (they’ve done a great job this season!), but that was pretty a ham-fisted moment. It wasn’t meant to be for Lexie and Aussie Todd.īut on that note: One moment this episode that had me spluttering my wine was when Lexie was on her fantasy date with Hamish, and she said he was in “friendzone danger,” which was immediately followed by the kind of thunderous “DUN-DUN-DUN” you’d hear in a superhero film.
Judging by the general comments I’ve received on these recaps, a lot of people feel very strongly about how dumb The Bachelorette is, but you cannot deny that the emotional stakes are high. Todd gracefully wished Lexie and Hamish the best before walking away, and it was that moment I realised that this show has overpowered me: as much as you can laugh at how ridiculous The Bachelorette is, and how emotionally hollow the whole exercise is, it eventually worms its way into your heart, and you can’t help but feel for the men getting their hearts broken on national television. “I feel so fortunate to have felt even a small amount of the love I know that you can give,” she told him, after saying that her heart was with “someone else” (which had me thinking for a second that there was another twist coming, and her heart wasn’t going to be with Hamish either, but I’ve clearly just been watching too much dramatic television in lockdown). Yep, Lexie and Hamish are this season’s final couple, with Lexie tearfully saying goodbye to sweet Aussie Todd at the altar final rose ceremony. Who did she pick? Drumroll please… Hamish. We’ve reached the end of the road on the second season of The Bachelorette NZ, with Lexie’s final decision concluding what was, by and large, a fairly tame season overall.
